 FAQs

  • Mriga Narrative Cartography is a developmental editing method that maps the emotional, symbolic, thematic, and structural architecture of your story.

It does not diagnose problems or “fix craft.”

Instead, it reveals the patterns, gravitational forces, and hidden logic shaping your narrative so you can revise from a place of clarity and resonance.

    It blends:

    • narrative theory

    • phenomenology

    • decolonial storywork

    • intuitive pattern-recognition

    • symbolic + emotional architecture

Your map becomes a visual, conceptual guide to what your story is really doing — and what it’s quietly asking to become.

  • Traditional developmental editing focuses on:

    • plot

    • pacing

    • character arcs

    • “craft fixes”

Mriga Narrative Cartography asks a different question:

“What interior architecture is shaping this story?”

Rather than prescribing solutions, the method reveals:

    • thematic resonance

    • emotional physics

    • symbolic systems

    • tensions and contradictions

    • narrative gravity

    • world-level logic

    • negative space

This gives you agency and clarity without coercion or critique.

  • No.

Cosmology is used symbolically and conceptually — not spiritually, not astrologically, not predictively.

It is a metaphor system for:

    • pattern

    • resonance

    • movement

    • relationality

    • multiplicity

Writers of all backgrounds comfortably work with this method.

  • “Mriga” refers to the deer — the seeker — and to a star-field associated with curiosity, subtle perception, and following faint trails.
It reflects the heart of this method:
the ability to perceive emotional and symbolic pathways that are not obvious but deeply meaningful.

You can read more on the About page.

  • Writers who are:

    • building literary or speculative work

    • writing symbolically or emotionally complex stories

    • working with myth, dream logic, cosmology, or metaphor

    • exploring nonlinear structures

    • stuck because the deeper architecture feels fuzzy

    • writing intuitive, atmospheric, or world-rich fiction

    • craving clarity without critique

    Perfect for:
    ✔ Novels
    ✔ Novellas
    ✔ Short stories
    ✔ Hybrid + experimental
    ✔ Literary speculative
    ✔ Character-driven fiction

    Fully Aligned Genres

    • Literary fiction (internal, slow, resonant, character-based)

    • Speculative fiction (including soft sci-fi, slipstream, fabulism, magical realism)

    • Hybrid forms (mixed genre, lyric, braided, fragmented)

    • Mythic + folkloric narrative (decolonial, non-Western structures, ancestral logics)

    • Visionary fiction (adrienne maree brown / Walidah Imarisha lineage)

    • Polyfuturism: Queer futurisms, South Asian futurisms, Dalit futurisms, Afrofuturist or Indigenous futurist work

    • Nonlinear / constellation-structured narratives (spiral, branching, recursive, multi-voiced)

    • Experimental prose (fragmentary, poetic, sensory, symbolic)

    • Lyrical or speculative poetry with narrative architecture

    • Reflective, relational memoir (meaning-making rather than documentation)

    • Autotheory (critical + personal hybrid work)

    • Diaspora writing (migration, inheritance, lineage, language, fragmentation)

    Partially Aligned Genres

These can fit depending yours goals and the text’s shape:

    • Literary YA (if subtle, interior, identity-driven)

    • Fantasy (low-magic, character-driven, where worldbuilding is symbolic rather than encyclopedic)

    • Quiet romance or love-based narratives (if emotional texture > trope execution)

    • Essay collections (if thematic resonance and through-lines matter)

    • Micro-chapbooks or hybrid poetic sequences

These genres are usually compatible, so let’s chat to make sure my method is a good fit for your writing!

  • This method is less useful for:

    • Plot-driven commercial fiction (hard deadlines, trope logic over resonance)

    • Hard sci-fi (big engineering/physics-heavy worldbuilding)

    • Thriller, mystery, procedural (rigid pacing templates)

    • Pure genre romance (trope-execution focus)

    • Very “craft-rule-centric” writers (seeking 3-act structure, beatsheets, Save the Cat, etc.)

    • Self-help memoirs (productized transformation arc)

    • Clinical, legal, investigative memoir

    • Prescriptive nonfiction (how-to, business books)

    • Bigoted, exclusionary or harmful ideological work

If uncertain, just ask — I will be honest about whether this method will serve you.

  • Depending on your package:

    • a constellation map of your story’s patterns

    • emotional and symbolic architecture mapping

    • analysis of thematic + gravitational centers

    • resonance mapping

    • narrative ecology insights

    • character interiority and emotional physics

    • next-step revision suggestions

    • optional pacing, worldbuilding, or structural notes

Full-manuscript clients receive a much more extensive multi-layer atlas.

    See offerings above for specifics.

  • A typical live session includes:

    1. A brief grounding and orientation

    2. A conversation about your story, themes, or questions

    3. Discussion through a preliminary map I have created before the call

    4. Interpretive synthesis — what patterns are emerging, where the story’s gravity lies

    5. Time for your questions, reflections, and clarifications

I do not require you to read aloud.

I do not map in real time unless the project specifically calls for it — most mapping is done beforehand so we can explore the architecture together without pressure.

  • Bring whatever you have:

    • pages

    • a chapter

    • a messy draft

    • fragments

    • an idea

    • a synopsis

    • notes

    • a manuscript

The method works beautifully with unfinished or uncertain material.

  • You do not need to be ready.
You do not need to be polished.
    You do not need confidence.

This method is designed for early-stage, emotionally vulnerable, or in-progress writing.

You are welcome exactly where you are.

  • No.

This is not a critique service.
There is no shaming, no pathologizing, no “here’s what’s wrong.”

My role is to reveal the meaning and structure already within your work — not to impose a craft template or diagnose problems.

  • Many of my clients are deeply sensitive writers — some are neurodivergent, some are trauma-aware, some are simply emotionally attuned.

Your sensitivity is not an obstacle; it’s part of your artistic intelligence.

    My approach is:

    • gentle

    • spacious

    • collaborative

    • non-coercive

    • respectful

You will not be pushed or rushed.

    • a simplified or sensory-light map

    • transcripts

    • split sessions (two shorter calls instead of one)

You’ll be able to select accommodations directly in the intake form.

  • Your intake form includes a comprehensive content-warning checklist so I can prepare appropriately before reading your work.

    You may also request:

    • warnings before we discuss certain themes

    • pacing adjustments

    • the ability to pause at any time

    Your emotional safety matters.

    For poetry I map:

    • image constellations

    • emotional resonance architecture

    • symbolic systems

    • conceptual coherence

    • thematic scaffolding

It is especially powerful for hybrid, lyric, and experimental work.

  • I won’t “fix” anything for you — but I will help you understand:

    • what your plot is already doing

    • where its tensions are trying to move

    • which emotional or thematic arcs matter

    • what the underlying logic of the story is

This gives you a clear direction for revision without prescriptive craft rules.

  • You receive a PDF containing:

    • your constellation map

    • diagrams or sub-maps

    • annotations

    • synthesis notes

    • next steps

    • (optional) a linked Miro board

    • Files are stored securely on Google Drive

    • After 6 months, the audio and video are deleted from Google Drive

    • Audio and video are archived locally and privately with encryption

    • You may opt out of recording entirely

Recordings help me produce accurate maps and deliverables — they are never shared.

    • Cancellations within 24 hours incur a $25 fee

    • One emergency cancellation is always free — no explanation needed

    • Payments are non-refundable

    • If you reschedule, your session credit remains valid for 6 months

If pricing changes before you reschedule, current rates apply.

  • No.

This method strengthens the clarity and architecture of your story, which often supports later publishing success — but no editorial method can guarantee outcomes.

  • Mriga Narrative Cartography is my intellectual property and trademark.

I will eventually teach it through workshops and future programs.

  • Writers often choose this method when they say things like:

    • “My story feels huge and emotionally complex.”

    • “I know this means something, but I can’t articulate it.”

    • “I’m too close to see what matters.”

    • “I want clarity, not critique.”

    • “I need a map.”

If those resonate, this method will serve you.

  • I’m a speculative and literary fiction writer, poet, and developmental editor with a BA from Emory University and an MA in the Humanities (Creative Writing track) from the University of Chicago. Across all of my professional, academic, and artistic experiences, my main priority has always been to use anti-oppressive frameworks to center and amplified institutionally marginalized voices and experiences.

Within the literary world, I have supported fiction, nonfiction, and poetry writers with developmental editing, copyediting, and proofreading. Additionally, I have a long love story with the visual arts and materiality spaces, including archival, museum, and cultural spaces.

All of my experiences interwoven narrative craft, cultural research, and creative methodology in such a way that has led me to develop my own story-mapping approach: Mriga Narrative Cartography—a method that helps writers see the emotional, symbolic, and structural architecture of their stories with clarity, meaning, and purpose.
